"You can marry your MP, you can have sex with your MP, you can pay tax with your MP, but you can't vote for your MP". It's about time this injustice was stopped, give 16 year olds the vote. They can die for this country but they can't vote for it, they can pay tax for this country, but they can't vote for it. At the age of 16, we can legally leave school, work full time and pay taxes, leave home, get married, join the armed forces, and choose where we want our lives to go. At 16, we take control of our futures, yet we are denied the right to do what every other adult in the country who does the same, but is over 18 can vote.

Dylan

“Let me introduce myself: my name is Mog Edwards. Not Mog short for Michael, Mickey or Margaret for that matter. Just Mog. (My mother liked cats). And my father had a sense of humour. Some of you may know me from the works of my friend Dylan. He was a poet and a lover, and we met many years ago in my home-village. He visited one day and forgot to get back on the bus. Having decided that he was going to stay he came to my shop in ...order to buy some clothing, as he hadn’t brought a case with him. And believe me, it was not a moment too soon. He was dressed in a bottle-green cricket shirt, and he looked for all the world like an unmade bed. We discussed his sartorial requirements and financial situation and quickly came to the conclusion that I would dress him, and he would pay me by giving me poems. An odd arrangement I know, but at the time I was emotionally delicate. And verbally inadequate. He maintained that I could do further justice to his words than he…”
The Dylan Thomas Centre’s programme of Saturday summer lunchtime theatre performances continues with Throw Away Your Bedsocks on Saturday, 31 July at 1pm. Who is the best interpreter of poetry? The poet or the reader? Should poetry be read or heard? Using Dylan Thomas’ poems as a base, Adrian Metcalfe, most recently seen as Daniel Jones in the acclaimed production, Warmley, asks the question: is it better to be Mog Edwards than Eli Jenkins?

Sam LLewellyn

The Minimum Boat (new book): this quirky compilation brings together many of nautical thriller writer Sam Llewellyn's articles for Practical Boat Owner magazine (read by 200,000 a month). Owner of a traditional Drascombe Lugger, Llewellyn is an advocate of keeping sailing simple, and in this wonderful collection of nautical observations he promotes the minimalist boating lifestyle whilst poking gentle fun at the expensive, complicated, ostentatious forms of sailing. Laced with humour and tongue in cheek jibes, and illustrated throughout by cartoons from the inimitable Mike Peyton, this is the ideal bunkside read. Talk Deeply

Deep conversations make people happier than small talk . . . Would you be happier if you spent more time discussing the state of the world and the meaning of life — and less time talking about the weather? It may sound counterintuitive, but people who spend more of their day having deep discussions and less time engaging in small talk seem to be happier, said Matthias Mehl, a psychologist at the University of Arizona who published a study on the subject. “We found this so interesting, because it could have gone the other way — it could have been, ‘Don’t worry, be happy’ — as long as you surf on the shallow level of life you’re happy, and if you go into the existential depths you’ll be unhappy,” [Thank you New York Times and RONI CARYN RABIN and ConversationsZenShui/Getty Images,March 2010]

Dydd Dewi Sant

The National Day of Wales is always 1st of March, Dydd Dewi Sant, and we all wear a yellow daffodil flower. Dewi was one of the founders of the Celtic Church (c.589 AD) in the British Isles, and his day is celebrated with much singing of songs like Calon Lân.
Calon Lân is also sung before every rugby match thoughout the season, often by 1000's at a match. It is also sung beautifully in pubs, clubs, churches ! and by folksingers.
Nid wy'n gofyn bywyd moethus,
Aur y byd na'i berlau mân,
Gofyn 'rwyf am galon hapus,
Calon onest, calon lân.

Calon lân yn llawn daioni,
Tecach yw na'r lili dlos:
Dim ond calon lân all ganu
Canu'r dydd a chanu'r nos.

The first part translates as:
I don't ask for a luxurious life,
the world's gold or its fine pearls,
I ask for a happy heart,
an honest heart, a pure heart.

Here is Canol Lân sung by Bryn Tervel and choir:

Darwin in Chile

In 1835, Charles Darwin experienced an earlier earthquake that destroyed Concepción:

February 20th 1835.
This day has been memorable . . . the most severe earthquake . . . I happened to be on shore, and was lying down to rest myself. It came on suddenly, and lasted two minutes, but the time appeared much longer.

The rocking of the ground was very sensible. The undulations appeared to my companion and myself to come from due east, whilst others thought they proceeded from south-west: this shows how difficult it sometimes is to perceive the directions of the vibrations.

There was no difficulty in standing upright, but the motion made me almost giddy: it was something like the movement of a vessel in a little cross-ripple . . . A bad earthquake at once destroys our oldest associations: the earth, the very emblem of solidity, has moved beneath our feet like a thin crust over a fluid; – one second of time has created in the mind a strange idea of insecurity, which hours of reflection would not have produced.

In the forest, as a breeze moved the trees, I felt only the earth tremble, but saw no other effect. Captain Fitzroy and some officers were at the town during the shock, and there the scene was more striking; for although the houses, from being built of wood, did not fall, they were violently shaken, and the boards creaked and rattled together. The people rushed out of doors in the greatest alarm. It is these accompaniments that create that perfect horror of earthquakes, experienced by all who have thus seen, as well as felt, their effects.

The tides were very curiously affected. The great shock took place at the time of low water; and an old woman who was on the beach told me that the water flowed very quickly, but not in great waves, to high-water mark, and then as quickly returned to its proper level . . . The same kind of quick but quiet movement in the tide happened a few years since at Chiloe, during a slight earthquake, and created much causeless alarm. In the course of the evening there were many weaker shocks, which seemed to produce in the harbour the most complicated currents, and some of great strength.

Gwerinllywodraeth

Surprising how much pleasure can be derived from the use of a single word. I remember a phase of playing a rather silly game in the National Assembly about who could meld a selected, obscure word into a speech . . . I was quite good at it. Well, my latest little challenge is to search through my Welsh Dictionary before a media appearance, select a new word, and try to bring it into my contribution. Last night's personal 'word challenge' before appearing on Pawb a'i Farn on S4/C was 'Gwerinllywodraeth'. What a beautiful word it is. It means 'Republic'. Its almost as good a word as 'Hyrwyddo' which means 'Promote', or 'Arallgyfeirio' which means 'Diversify' - words that you can really wrap your tongue around. [ Diolch yn fawr, Glyn ]

Epic evening with John Bally ! His team's film [Nat Geo Quality] of gliding (big sailpanes) in Morocco, and his Google Picasa slide-show of flying in Namibia, had us* all* spellbound earlier tonight. Here is the international team's fine BLOG:

President - me cayó fatal

Peter Mandelson, President of the Board of Trade: It is not often that fate hands you what appears to be a total moral and political victory. But this one looked like a slam dunk. As some of the world’s most self-important people descended last week on the World Economic Forum in Davos, I was delighted to find myself on the same plane as Peter Mandelson, President of the Board of Trade, deputy prime minister and Lord High Everything Else.

I was thrilled, that is, because my colleague and I were travelling steerage, in keeping with the new spartan regime . . .

Gracias Boris.

Proxigean Tides
Dept of Learning Something Every Day:
I'd never heard of proxigean tides despite a lifelong love of long words, so it was delightful to come across the term at Frogma today. We are due for some over the weekend, with a height of 5.2m in Chichester Harbour on Tuesday, so it's floodboards and sandbags out, chaps.
A proxigean tide is an extreme spring tide that happens when the moon passes through a perigee, bringing it closest to the earth (about 365,500km, compared with the apogee at 406,700km). Perigees only coincide with springs every one and a half years or so, as you can see at AstronomyCafe.
Every 31 years the perigee is at its absolute minimum and coincides with a new moon, which means it is lined up with the sun for the maximum gravitational pull, and extreme proxigean tides occur. These can be very damaging. Luckily, one isn't due until 2026 apparently.

Thank you Chris ! and the Chepstow reporter (near me).

Qué Horror . . .

Carambola

We already know Chayanne from Provócame, where he portrays a shy stable hand who also sings the show's sanguine theme song. Now we encounter his wilder side, singing about Lola, a jet-set party-loving socialite who might even be a bit dangerous:

Como disfrutas la carambola
How you enjoy deceit, Lola.

But how does carambola translate as "deceit?"

The usage evolves from a billiards shot (known in English as a cannon), whereby the cue ball ricochets off its target and hits a third ball, seemingly by chance, in a way that's beneficial to the player. The word comes from a pocket-less type of billiards known in English as carom billiards, and in Spanish as billar de carambolas where these types of rebounding shots are standard and can be amazing to watch.

So when someone like Lola plays her hand to achieve some benefit and makes it look like an accident, she is doing una carambola. A skillful billiards player bounces off one ball to hit another, and a skillful conman/girl sets a trap that does not directly point back to him/her.

Estoy seguro que los políticos están haciendo carambola
I'm sure that the politicians are doing something illicit

Murcian make-up

Scientists have found the first persuasive evidence that Neanderthals wore "body paint" 50,000 years ago. The team report in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) that shells containing pigment residues were Neanderthal make-up containers.

Scientists unearthed the shells at two archaeological sites in the Murcia province of southern Spain. The team says its find buries "the view of Neanderthals as half-wits" and shows they were capable of symbolic thinking. Professor Joao Zilhao, the archaeologist from Bristol University in the UK, who led the study, said that he and his team had examined shells that were used as containers to mix and store pigments.

Black sticks of the pigment manganese, which may have been used as body paint by Neanderthals, have previously been discovered in Africa. "[But] this is the first secure evidence for their use of cosmetics," he told BBC News. "The use of these complex recipes is new. It's more than body painting."

The scientists found lumps of a yellow pigment, that they say was possibly used as a foundation. They also found red powder mixed up with flecks of a reflective brilliant black mineral. Some of the sculpted, brightly coloured shells may also have been worn by Neanderthals as jewellery.

Mr Bean . . .
